'Matisse: Drawing Life' at GoMA

It goes without saying, that I am beyond thrilled to be able to catch 'Matisse: Drawing Life' at Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).

Curated exclusively for GoMA by Céline Chicha-Castex, curator of Modern and Contemporary Prints, Bibliothèque nationale de France, independent Paris-based curator Emilie Ovaere-Corthay, and designed by French artist Christophe Cuzin, this exhibition sources from both public and private collectors to explore the fabulous range and depth of Henri Matisse's engagement with the graphic mark.

Ending the exhibition is a cafe with French-themed pastries and food, and the interactive space for visitors called 'The Drawing Room', an interactive large-scale drawing studio.

Strategically placed with counters and tables, one could grab a piece of acid-free paper, a pencil and sketch the real-life model perched on stage, or any of the flowers, vases, still-life tableaux and sculptures (including a Degas- 'Danseuse regardant la plante de son pied droit' c.1920-36).

I have chosen to draw 'Red Fish on Round aquarium', my humble homage.

A daily, violinist serenade us as we draw or move through the space to admire the drawings of others. If you prefer to do an electronic sketch, there're plenty of tablets available.

At the State Library of Queensland to follow British architectural artist Stephen Wiltshire in his attempt to capture the river city on a 4 meter long panorama canvas.

Stephen began drawing at the State Library of Queensland on Saturday morning, after an early morning ride on the wheel at Southbank, and a late afternoon helicopter ride over Brisbane on Friday and finished the final part of the Panorama on Tuesday 29 November.

The image of Brisbane will join a collection of other iconic skylines Stephen has created in his career to date, and will be displayed at the State Library of Queensland for 6 months.

At GoMA to explore Yayoi Kusama dots and loops. We will cover chairs, sofas, and entire rooms with colourful sticky paper dots!

Obliteration Room begins as a white room with white furniture. Over the period of the exhibition, it will become a sea of colour as visitors are issued with a sheet of coloured dots which we can stick wherever we fancy!!!!!

Even saying Yayoi Kusama’s name makes me happy – try it, I swear it will do it for you too. On top of this we now get to see this highly esteemed and innovative artist’s happy, colourful work on display at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art

‘Look Now, See Forever’ is immersed in style, with GOMA being taken over by Kusama’s dramatic sculptures and paintings, as well as film projection and installation. Her brilliant 80 year-old mind has created some of the most significant art in the last hundred years.

Kusama uses colour, pattern, form and space in a most interesting way, challenging the viewer to see the world completely differently. The artist herself sees the world in a different way – she suffers from severe OCD and 'depersonalisation syndrome' since she was a child. It's nicknamed the 'Alice in Wonderland Disease' because, like Alice, it makes the person feel like their body is dissolving, changing or even absent, and they constantly exist in a state where it is impossible to distinguish between reality and imagination. Dots are her major obsession, and art is her therapy.

Yayoi Kusama: Inside the studio. An in-conversation between Ms Yoriko Tsuruta, who has worked closely with the artist for many years, and Suhanya Raffel, Deputy Director, Curatorial and Collection Development.

Kusama: Princess of Polka Dots is a feature documentary work-in-progress about avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama. The paparazzi nicknamed her the Polka Dot Princess in the 1960s when she lived in New York City. At that time, she rivaled Andy Warhol for press attention. Now in her early 80s, Kusama is considered Japan’s greatest living artist.

Cultural precinct Brisbane city.

A stroll through some of my fav spots in South Brisbane.

The scrap metal "Roos" are the result of a recent push by the Brisbane City Council for what they call "public art". Art that, instead of living in an art gallery, lives out on the streets among the people. They were created by local artist Christopher Trotter, who specialises in sculpture using scrap metal.

The Queen has listened to the harrowing stories of victims of the deadly Queensland floods during a day trip to the state capital Brisbane. The January 2011 floods, were the worst natural disaster to hit Queensland for almost 40 years. At the height of the crisis, three-quarters of the state were declared a disaster area.

Sometimes I feel knocked sideways by the amazingness of some people.
Nothing I could write about Gemma & Justin, and their wedding, will do justice to the amazing people that they are.

Especially at times when I get to hang out with incredible people such as Gemma and Justin, who are just so completely open, and so full of love for each other that it practically hits you in the face when you catch a glimpse of it.

I can’t congratulate you enough, it is clear that you were meant for each other and I am so so happy to have been present on your big day!!

How privileged do I feel to be able to witness and document such a beautiful thing.

Thank you so much for having me, and thank you to your families and friends for being as utterly lovely as you two are.

'Land, Sea and Sky’ embraces the cultural and practical significance of land, sea and sky to Torres Strait Islander people and its influence on their art.

Alick Tipoti’s monumental wall painting ‘Kaygasiw-Usul' translating to both ‘Trail of underwater dust created by the shovel nosed shark’ & ‘the star constellation of the Milky Way’, this wall tells of a great Torres Strait creation story.

Presented across the major Level 3 galleries at GoMA, this will be the largest and possibly the most significant exhibition to date of contemporary art by Torres Strait Islander artists anywhere in the world.

More than 40 artists, including major commissions of exciting new works, and loans from both important public and private collections across Australia.

At the Queensland Art Gallery to see the most awaited exhibition exclusive to Brisbane in Australia, Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Man, The Image & The World.

The exhibit was amazing! I haven’t seen such a well thought-out and fine presentation as this in some time, if ever.

His love for photography also led him to experiment with the medium of cinema in the years that followed when he produced his internationally acclaimed documentaries, ‘Le Retour’.

More than 250 of Cartier-Bresson‟s photographs, including his defining records of modern history and intimate portraits of daily life from around the world.

In 1952, he published a book called ‘Images, a la Sauvette’ (The Decisive Moment) which was a compilation of 126 photos from Bresson’s travelogues from the East and West.

His growing interest in photojournalism led Bresson to cover the outbreak of World War II which resulted in his arrest by the Germans. After spending close to 35 months as a prisoner-of-war Bresson’s third escape attempt finally bore fruit and he returned to France.

If you ever want to learn composition, I highly suggest studying his photos. He knew shape and form, light and texture like no other.

His exhibition is inspirational!!!

West End is one of the older suburbs of Brisbane, a lively mixture of cultures, it feels like home!!!!

It represents a l o v e for a simpler life that is valued for its culture, arts, music and ideas.

Community gardens are protected, Friends of the Earth meet to discuss local issues, bikes are manufactured from recycled material, lawyers work for f r e e at the Environmental Defenders Office.

Sign the petition here. Residents are not opposed to development – in fact we welcome it – but it must be in accordance with sustainable planning principles.

During the 1850s cast-iron lacework came to Australia, where it made its way on to Queensland homes.

The location is ideal. A walk or bike ride to the city.

I always look forward to the following year's performance of Bangarra at QPAC because I know that it will be unbelievable. And this year, it was one of the most fabulous dance performances I've ever seen from Bangarra Dance Theatre!

On a human scale, choreography enhanced by good lighting, an exquisite wardrobe displaying an efficient range of subtly colour-degraded shades, the whole sets, the screens, the music was as i expected above the norm.

Brilliant, full of sensitivity and expressiveness, this show, with its cast of amazing dancers, reaches a high degree of true poetry in movement.

BRAVO!!!!!!!

Rekindling Indigenous culture, Belong features two new dance theatre works: ID by Artistic Director Stephen Page and About by Elma Kris, choreographer and dancer with Bangarra.With ID, Stephen investigates what it means to be Aboriginal in the 21st century, asking important questions of identity. Elma was born and raised on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait, in About she is inspired by customs passed down through families for generations.

Ideas Festival 2011

The Ideas Festival 2011 was held this last weekend, at the State Library Queensland.

Saturday and Sunday not only had I the opportunity to finalize reports and assessments for the end of semester at the State Library, but also the opportunity to visit and participate in several of the events offered.

This year the festival was a place of debate, discussion, and a focus on community driven action. The Ideas program focused on harnessing creativity to develop innovative solutions to some of the critical issues currently facing Queensland: sustainability, food futures and happiness – both for individuals and the community as a whole.

Flood of Ideas, is a forum gathering diverse and creative ideas for how we could plan and respond to floods and natural disasters in our community.

Flooding occurred in many areas of Queensland during late December 2010 & early January 2011, with three quarters of the state declared a disaster zone.

"The expansion of the Ideas Festival in 2011 typifies the spirit that is taking us forward following the recent floods and cyclones - it's an attitude that we should not just rebuild, but that we should emerge better and stronger than before." Minister of Finance and Arts, the Honorable Rachel Nolan.

Ideas Festival 2011 objective is to shines a light on the future.

Virtually sustainable: The world of serious gaming. Where virtual solutions are sought for real problems.

No longer just a past time, computer games are pushing us to reach new levels in medicine, health, advertising, training and education. Bryan Moses, creator of serious game Alternator, funded by ABC and Screen Australia, demonstrates how serious games work.

On site at the State Library, the Urban Gardens - So fresh and so green! provide a living example of how to grow thriving fruit, veggies and native bush tucker in the closed quarters of city environments.

Urban Garden was hosted by the architects and permaculturists from Dirty Works Design Company, responsible for the build of the garden.

Haus installation by designer Alexander Lotersztain. If you’re in Brisbane, looking for a great place to meet, this is definitely it – a haus away from home.

Everyone in the neighborhood, and beyond, seems to be participating in this years Festival of Ideas.

Coolangatta, Gold Coast - New South Wales

Coolangatta and its immediate neighboring "Twin Town" Tweed Heads, in New South Wales.

In the area surrounding Greenmount Point there are arguably some of the finest surfing breaks in Australia. Beginning from the southern most break on the Gold Coast is the Queensland and NSW border beach break of Duranbah, locally known as D-Bah.

Duranbah Beach has a fast breaking beach break that works best on a south east swell. The bigger the swell the faster and more hollow is the wave formation. The atmosphere on the water wave selection and positioning is aggressive and at times even tribal. Local surfers are guarded about their ownership of their famous beach break.

Duranbah Beach is often used as the location for many surfing events including international and professional surfing contests, as well as Professional Australian Surf Life Saving.

At the Gallery of Modern Art's latest exhibition, 21st Century: Art in the First Decade

The gallery has done it again, a must-see after the flood exhibition of ambitious proportions. It aims to encapsulate some of the key trends of contemporary art in the first 10 years of this century, in Australia and internationally.

The gallery was filled with people from across the demographic spectrum. It seemed to capture the imagination of kids as well as those who refuse to grow up.

Rivane Neuenschwander’s wall of ribbons with wishes printed on them "I wish your wish". A beautiful interactive sophisticated play of emotions.

Untitled (NASDAQ) 2003 by Claude Closky (France), is a wallpaper work that prefigured the financial crisis of 2009

Yayoi Kusama’s installations Narcissus garden 1966/2002.

Stockholm-based artist Carsten Höller produced an installation of two spiral-shaped slides in GoMA’s foyer for '21st Century'. Described by the artist as a ‘happiness producing machine’, the slides will have an elegant, sculptural presence at the entrance to the exhibition and allow visitors to participate in the work — sending them hurtling between the Gallery’s third floor and ground level.

Other notable commissions include Leandro Erlich’s astounding trompe l’oeil sculpture, The swimming pool, which represented Argentina at the 2001 Venice Biennale.

It is so gratifying to see the gallery mount such a well-attended show, despite the devastating floods of summer. Brisbane’s Gallery Of Modern Art/Queensland Art Gallery complex is now the most popular art gallery in the country, according to recently released figures.

Contemporary art is always going to be the most critiqued and the most misunderstood of all the different art histories. But, we don’t need to understand the history of modern art to enjoy 21st Century — and that’s precisely the point.

In its large-scale installations, the exhibition demonstrates just how vibrant and enjoyable, a commitment to new art can be. This really is living art.
