Australian Archibald Prize winner Del Kathryn Barton fascinates me.



I've certainly found it difficult to drag myself away from any online gallery (i wish to be lucky enough to see her work in "real life" one day).



Claire Armstrong, from Art and Australia Magazine, put it best when she wrote that Del's paintings 'encapsulate the exciting crossovers between traditional techniques and contemporary design and illustration', something she remarked is a hallmark of much emerging Australian art.









When is she going to publish a book? I would die to see the whole collection of her works!

USA road trip

Un voyage que je reve faire depuis longtemps, et que j'espere pouvoir le realiser, avec mon cheri, bientot.

Des taxi jaunes de New York jusqu’aux plages de Los Angeles, en passant par le pont de San Francisco et les lumieres aveuglante de Las Vegas, je serais sur une de ces routes larges et interminables sous un soleil brulant.

Mon chemin pour visiter l'Amerique est a peu pres trace, mais tel une aventuriere, je me laisserai guider.

Je ne sais pas encore de quel cote aller me promener dans ces villes, mais avec un peu de chance je me retrouverais dans les bonnes boutiques, je trouverais l’endroit parfait pour grignoter ou encore voir le bon show du cote de Broadway.

Voici le trajet que j’ai plus ou moins trace:

* New York pour 4 jours
* Direction la cote ouest, San Francisco la ville hippie (le célèbre quartier de Haight Ashbury, Castro et Mission) !
* Yosemite, pour se plonger dans la nature apres une semaine sur le bitume.
* Le Sequoia nationnal park, ou règne le plus grand arbre du monde.
* Las Vegas, l’occasion d’essayer l’une de ces machines a sous !
* Supai, un village d’indiens avec de sublimes cascades d’eau turquoise.
* Le Grand Canyon, youhouu!
* Los Angeles, en passant par Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu...
* Big Sur, pour admirer la mer d’un cote, les montagnes de l’autre.
* Santa Cruz
* Retour a San francisco pour prendre l’avion qui va me ramener a New York puis l'Astralie.

USA a trip i’ve wanted to make for quite some time now, and i hope to do, with my sweetheart, one day soon.

From yellow taxicabs to the beaches of Los Angeles to the Golden Gate bridge to the blinding lights of Las Vegas, I will be riding on a wide and never-ending road beneath the burning hot rays of the summer sun.

My route is pretty much mapped out, but adventurous as i am, i might make a few spontaneous turns here and there…

I still don’t know where i should go in these cities, but i’m sure i’ll find my way to the good shops, restaurants, and maybe even a Broadway show.

Here’s the tentative route :

* 4 days in New York
* To the west coast: San Francisco the hippie village (the famous areas of Haight Ashbury, Castro & Mission)!
* Yosemite National Park, to take in a bit of nature after a week spent in the concrete jungle.
* Sequoia national park, home of the largest tree in the world.
* Las Vegas… slot machines!
* Supai, an Indian village that boasts the most amazing turquoise coloured waterfalls.
* The Grand Canyon, yahoo!
* Los Angeles, i.e. Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu...
* Big Sur, for the ocean on one side, and mountains on the other
* Santa Cruz
* Back to San Francisco where i’ll hop on a plane back to New York and then back to Australia.

Oh, adventure, ADVENTURE!

Valerie and her week of wonders

Cela faisait un bon moment que je n’avais pas eu de nouveau coup de coeur cinématographique.

C’est un film tcheque, datant de 1970 qui m’a recemment attire l’attention: Valerie and her week of wonder (titre original: Valerie a týden divu). Realise par Jaromil Jireš, ce film est base selon le livre de meme nom, ecrit par Vítězslav Nezval.

L’histoire est difficilement explicable, ce qui, curieusement, fait aussi une partie de son charme. Laissant de cote toute notion de logique, il m’a fallu le visionner plusieurs fois avant de saisir toutes les subtilites qui le composent.

Mais ce qui m’a surtout plus dans ce film, c’est son incomparable esthetique, la beaute des images. Les decors oscillent entre paysages paradisiaques et sous-sols poussiereux abritant des vampires et autres êtres inquiétants, à l’apparence tres proche d’un certain Nosferatu.

je vous recommande donc ce film, voyage dans l’esprit insaisissable d’une adolescente que je qualifierais a la fois d’insolite, onirique, metaphorique, poetique, avec un pointe d’erotisme, et meme parfois des allusions politiques en accord avec le pays et l’epoque.

I hadn’t been really taken with a movie for quite a while now…

My most recent infatuation involves a Czech movie circa 1970 called Valerie and her Week of Wonders (originally titled: Valerie a týden divu). Directed by Jaromil Jires, the film is based on the Vítězslav Nezval novel by the same name.

The story itself is hard to describe, which come to think of it, might be why i like it so much. Actually, i had to dismiss all notions of logic and watch it many times over before i really got all of its subtleties.

What i liked most about this film was its incredible aesthetic, its gorgeous imagery, not to mention the portrayal of the delicate. The backdrop oscillates between paradisiacal landscapes and musty basements that are host to vampires and other worrisome creatures, some of them bearing a certain resemblance to Nosferatu himself.

Worthy of your attention, this movie takes viewers on a journey through the elusive mind of an unusual, dreamlike, metaphorical, poetic, and slightly erotic adolescent who even manages to be political as a perfectly appropriate sign of the times.

If you could realize 3 wishes (other than peace in the world, end of starvation, family health) what would they be ?

Hmm this is a tough question, hard to choose … i would like to be always happy and inspired, i would like to have a magic wand to make appear anything i want immediately, and a flying hover, just like in back to the future !

Favourite food ? I’m crazy for salads, and, ice cream.

Favorite sweet ? Honey & chocolate !

Favorite film ? I love every Sofia Coppola movies.

Favorite horror film ? Valerie and her week of wonders :)

Ask him if i can babysitt his kids ? No seriously, i don’t think i would do anything, but in the case it was Johnny Deep instead, it would be much different believe me :)

Things you love ? Springtime, taking pictures, having picnic in the middle of nowhere, being isnpired, people telling me how beautiful my shoes are.

Things you hate ? Infidelity, egocentric & egoist people.

Favorite drink ? Banana, pineaple and strawberry juice, white fruity wine, champagne, water.

What type of camera do you use? Do you ever edit them on the computer?

I’m using a canon 350 D, with a Canon EF - Objectif 50 mm f/1.4 & also a 18-55mm lens. I also use a compact Lumix with a Leica lens. I usually correct color & contrast with photoshop.

Who’s taking your pictures ?

I mostly take the pictures myself, using a tripod & a remote or the camera self timer.

old autochromes

The number of old autochromes floating around on the internet seems about endless; just when i think I've seen most of them i stumble across some wonderful little collection that i had no idea existed, such as the color photography work of the celebrity/San Francisco photographer Arnold Genthe. I think i'd only seen his black and white pictures of Greta Garbo, which are great in their blurry silent film kind of way, but these color photographs are so much better!



At least to me, since i'm extra into romantic things with a dark, kind of creepy edge . . . These portraits have the same sort of cinematic feel but i think these might be a bit more eerie, because every story i try to imagine up for these scenes ends up dark, and don't the girls in these portraits look a little like ghosts?

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Ahhhhhhh.. Burton’s Alice in Wonderland! I’m sure lots of you already saw the official photos, but I really wanted to treat myself with them today, so I’m posting the trailler in the blog! I love love love how the characters look like, and I cross my fingers for the movie to be exceptional! Can’t wait for March 2010.

“The film is actually a sequel to the original story, and follows Alice, now 17 years old, as she escapes from a snooty party and follows a white rabbit down a hole, back to Wonderland. The White Rabbit is convinced that he has the right girl, the one who had visited the magical land ten years prior. But Alice doesn’t remember her past visit to Wonderland. The creatures of Wonderland are ready to revolt and are hoping/waiting for Alice to help them, but will she? Can she?”

Alice au Pays des Merveilles de Tim Burton! Je me doute que la plupart d’entre vous auront deja vu les premieres photos officielles du film, mais aujourd’hui je m’auto-spoil en mettant la bande-annonce dans mon blog! J’aime enormement le concept de ces personnages, et je croise les doigts tres fort pour que le film soit exceptionnel (je suis tellement fan d’Alice que je n’ai pas envie d’avoir une deception, evidemment).

“Le film sera en fait une suite à l’histoire originale. Alice est maintenant âgée de 17 ans. Elle s’éclipse d’une fête un peu prétentieuse et suit un lapin blanc dans un trou, pour Le Pays des Merveilles. I believe that we all have a purpose here on earth. The goal that mankind is to achieve in this life is a simple one - learn to love one another and help your fellow man. Simple, right? Not so. There are so many toxic personality types out there today. At times, it feels as if the earth is littered with rotten apples.

When meeting others, you have to ask, "Does this person have values? Do they experience emotion? Do they have morals? Do they posses the ability to think of others besides themselves? Are they a giver or a taker? Are they of their word? What are thier insecurities and how do they deal with them? How do they express themselves? Are they constantly trying to prove something to themselves and others? How far will they go to do that? Do they enjoy taking risks? Do they find being secretive exhiliarating? What form of love are they capable of? Do they treat others as they themselves would like to be treated? Are they capable of apologies? What have their past actions been towards others? How have they loved themselves? How have they hurt others? Do they have a conscience? Do they experience guilt? Are they a comfortable liar? Do they love themselves or punish themselves without knowledge? Have they ever been a victim of someone else's crime? Have they ever been hurt? Will they hurt ME?"

When determining someone's soul value as a human being ask yourself, "Are they an evolved soul that has grasped this primal understanding of love - or are they an unevolved, immature selfish soul?"

Then ask yourself, "What kind of soul do I posses?"

It brings to mind a song titled "If Everyone Cared." Have a listen. There's a message in here for us all.

My dream camera!

I have never wanted a camera as much as I want a Leica model.

The Leica is the best marriage of the old school film world and the new digital era that I can think of! Really to have the camera that was used by the early photography gods is cool enough! To have it digital is beyond awesome! If I was rich I would buy this in a heartbeat!

Mon petit bijou pour un prix raisonnable

Utilisatrice d'un reflex Canon , je cherchai un appareil photo compact plus practique pour les voyages. Je viens juste de craquer sur Lumix de Panasonic surtout pour son zoom Leica, j'aime les productions Leica, mais on flirte pas mal avec le snobisme.. c'est pas grave, j'adore la prise en main!

Best Films 2008

Mongol
L'incroyable destinée de Gengis Khan. (Gengis Khan avait interdit la torture alors que les français l'on pratiqué illègrement il y a à peine 40 ans.) De son vrai nom Temudgin, ce légendaire chef des forces armées mongoles fut l'un des plus grands conquérants de l'histoire de l'humanité. Entre la fin du XIIe et le début du XIIIe siècle, l réussit à unir les tribus mongoles et créa un empire colossal comparable en taille à celui d'Alexandre le Grand, tjr en respect envers le peuple Tibetan!

[REC]
Un film d'horreur/fantastique espagnol plusieurs fois récompensé, notamment au dernier festival de Venise. Go see it!!

Into The Wild
Un grand trip solitaire! Le jeune idéaliste Christopher abandonne la vie que la plupart d'entre nous connait pour les contrées sauvages de l'Alaska... ce film m'a bouleversée!

Purple Violets (j’ignore s’il a été traduit en français)
It is an independent film, set in lower Manhattan, about four friends from college ready for change... i really loved the film.

La bonne surprise!!! Un film qui a le merite de sortir les francais du marasme ambiant! vive la france vive le nord vive le rire !

Star dust: le mystère de l'étoile
Stardust est un film résolument féérique, avec sorcières, princesses, pirates et héritages royaux. Un film avec des bons, des méchants, des quêtes, du danger et de l'héroïsme, des fantômes et des transformations. Un film vraiment distrayant, avec des moments de poésie et d'autres de franche rigolades. Une mention spéciale à Robert de Niro dans un rôle totalement à contre-courant, à Michelle Pfeiffer en vilaine sorcière, à Claire Danes en étoile éthérée et bien réelle. The film is based on a novel by Neil Gaiman's mon ecrivain britanique prefere.

Wall-E
Wall-E: le dernier être sur Terre est... un petit robot ! 700ans plus tôt, l'humanité à déserté notre planète laissant à cette incroyable machine le soin de nettoyer la Terre... graphiquement, c’est magnifique, et en quelques expressions, ils arrivent à donner énormément d’humanité à un robot à tête de jumelles.... la production Pixar réussit un pur tour de force!!

Spirits-Shutter
Un reportage photos à Tokyo - Ben et Jane déménagent au Japon
mais rapidement ils découvrent des images fantomatiques dans leurs photos... !! il a l'air trop bien!!! Je ne le conseille pas aux ames sensibles... ;o)

Mirrors
Un film de K. Shutherland .... ca a l'air assez flippant comme film !!! ;o)

Quantum of Solace: James Bond 22
Raconte la suite des aventures explosives que James Bond (Daniel Craig) avait vécues dans Casino Royale.

Max Payne
La première bande-annonce du film Max Payne basé sur le jeu PC vient d’arriver sur le net.

Sin City 2
J'attends avec impatience la sortie de Sin City 2 qui semble être en préparation mais aucune date définitive n'a été fixée. En espérant que la distribution des rôles et l'ambiance sera tout aussi réussi que Sin city, ce film que je trouve vraiment excellent. Merveilleuse adaptation cinématographique d'une BD à l'ambiance unique.

(basé sur le film de science-fiction de Robert Wise - 1951)
Cette nouvelle version a été réalisée par Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose). Keanu Reeves incarnera Klaatu, un extraterrestre dont l’arrivée sur Terre provoquera un bouleversement mondial.

Salvador Dali

I've never seen any video as wonderful, funny and delightful as this one of Salvador Dali. Love the signature at the beginning. The man was brilliant. I believe he's a leading man. He helped lead one of the most amazing artforms in known history. My favourite artist (my visit to his museum in spain) i've read most of the books He wrote, i like especially "the diary of a genious", you should hear his story when he destroyed a 5th Avenue shop window because they wanted to modify his work, and then was protected by a gangster in jail because he thought he was a dangerous monster... i adore His sence of humour. I'd sure love to travel in time and have a drink with him and Gala!!
